The default value for Emacs is 760kB which is extremely conservative on a modern machine. The real trick is to lower it back to something reasonable after initialization. This saves about 0.3 seconds on my init files.

I’ve been running Emacs for like 25 years. But I’ve never really configured it with anything fancy. Stefan Pofahl has this example XEmacs init file for AucTeX or MikTeX users stuck on Windows. [1] It might be a good source of cut-n-paste for experienced users, or for users that have no init-file, yet. If you already have an init file, you don’t want to just overwrite it, I asssume. I am guessing that your end goal is to run Emacs from a USB drive which you can carry around.

Many of the other files that are created by lisp packages are now stored in the .emacs.d directory too, so this keeps all your Emacs related files in one place.
